What Is Blockboard? Uses for Wardrobes, Shelves and Partitions

Blockboard is an engineered wood panel with a core of solid timber strips bonded between veneer layers. Plywood uses layers of thin wood veneer throughout. This difference in construction matters when you’re deciding how a panel will be cut, supported and finished.

Where can you use blockboard?

  • Wardrobe shutters: Consider it for tall shutters and check the panel thickness and hinge requirements with your carpenter.
  • Shelves and furniture panels: Confirm the expected load, span, and support spacing before selecting the board.
  • Interior partitions: Use it as a panel option where the framing and fixings suit the design.

How can you finish it?

A suitable laminate can coordinate with nearby doors or cabinets, while decorative veneer can give the panel a natural wood appearance. Include edge finishing in the plan, especially on visible shelf edges and wardrobe shutters.

What should you check before buying?

Share the panel dimensions, intended finish, and installation location with your supplier. If the project is near a sink or in a damp area, ask which grade is suitable for that exposure and how the exposed edges should be protected.
